Hereโ€™s How We Paint Doors | Greater Moncton Painting Contractor

In this video (see below), I’m going to show you exactly how we paint interior doors—and more importantly, the mechanics behind getting a smooth, even finish.

My name is Remi Boudreau, licensed painter, color consultant, and owner of Expressions Painting, proudly serving homeowners across Moncton, Riverview, Dieppe, and the Greater Moncton area.

Why We Paint Doors Last

In most of our projects, doors are one of the final steps.

The reason is simple: we want to get your home back to normal as quickly as possible so we prioritize painting the areas where furniture had to be moved.

Step 1: Remove Hardware & Prep

We start by removing the hardware that could get in the way—typically the door handle and latch (door catch)—while leaving the hinges in place.

This allows us to work efficiently without disturbing the door alignment, while still achieving a clean, professional finish.

Step 2: Cut In the Areas Rollers Can’t Reach

Just like with walls, the first step is cutting in.

On doors, that typically means:

- Around hinges

- Along edges

- Tight or detailed areas

In some cases, we’ll also cut along the bottom if the gap between the door and floor is too narrow.

Step 3: Use a Whiz Roller (And Use It Properly)

This is where understanding the mechanics really matters.

A whiz roller is different from a standard roller because it has microfiber on the edge, which helps get into detailed profiles on doors.

The key:

You need to load that edge with paint properly.

Our process:

  1. Dip the edge into the paint first
  2. Pull paint back onto the tray
  3. Roll it out evenly

If that edge isn’t loaded, you won’t get proper coverage in the details.

Step 4: Work Details First, Then Feather Out

The order of application is everything.

We always:

  1. Start with the detailed sections
  2. Use the edge of the roller to work paint in
  3. Feather it out into the surrounding areas
  4. Finish on the flat surfaces

This keeps everything even and prevents buildup in corners.

Step 5: Keep It Smooth and Consistent

A properly loaded roller will go a long way.

The goal is always:

  • Even pressure
  • Even coverage
  • A smooth, consistent finish

This same technique works whether you’re painting:

- Textured wood doors

- Flat panel doors

- Metal doors

The process doesn’t change—the mechanics stay the same.

Why Technique Matters

Painting doors might look simple, but getting that clean, professional finish comes down to:

  • Tool control
  • Paint distribution
  • Application order
